Writing Assignment: Literature Review
The assignment is to write a literature review on the social issue you selected for the annotated
bibliography. You must discuss and cite the three articles from your annotated bibliography,
at minimum one additional academic article or book on the topic that you identify on your
own, and the Brandt & Clare textbook (Brandt, J., & Clare, C. (2018) An Introduction to popular culture in the US: People, politics, and power. Bloomsbury Academic. ISBN 1501320572)
As a reminder, the social issues you can choose from are:
• Transphobia
In a research study, the literature review is an important component intended to demonstrate the
writer’s knowledge of the research topic based on existing research literature. In short, the
review outlines 1) the research that has already been done on the topic, 2) theoretical concepts
that relate to the topic (this is where the Brandt & Clare textbook comes in), and 3) the aspects
of the topic that are underexplored or not satisfactorily addressed in the current research.
A literature review is different from an annotated bibliography, which is a summary of articles. A
critical literature review is not a string of summaries; it is a synthesized review. Review means
more than summarize – the writer is not merely describing the study to the reader, i.e., why,
how, what. A literature review should tell a “story” about the topic, and should be organized by
themes or ideas that appear in the articles, not by source. (However, “story” is not meant
literally here. Do not use the word ‘story’ in your lit review nor any “I” statements.) By the end of
your literature review, your reader should understand what we know about your chosen topic
based on existing research and what areas of your topic still need to be explored.

The review requires critical reading, examination, and interpretation, not evaluation or personal
interpretation (e.g., you saying the study was good/not good, interesting/not interesting, etc.).
You should highlight limitations of existing studies, but be specific about what the issues are and
do not frame it as your personal opinion. A literature review should not include any first or
second person language (such as “I” statements).
Write a minimum of 1000 words, but less than 1200, including a title page and reference
page. Be sure to include a references page with all of your sources, e.g., journal articles,
textbooks, other) in APA-7. At minimum, you must include five sources: the three articles
from your annotated bibliography, one additional academic article or book, and the Brandt &
Clare textbook.

FORMAT: Correct formatting is important –
• Double spacing
• Font: 12 pt. Times New Roman or Cambria,
• 1” margins,
• APA 7 in-text citations.
• APA 7 formatted title page and references page.
• Maximum quotes from your sources = 3 short quotes (less than 40 words each).
Generally, you should paraphrase information from your sources rather than quoting it
directly.
