Compose a study report outlining the number of hours that scientists work.Scientist Spotlight: Derek Braun

Dr. Derek Braun was born in Omaha, Nebraska before moving to Madison, Illinois where he was raised. Being a deaf child, Dr. Braun attended St. Mary’s private school for people with developmental disabilities in his early life. For high school however, he attended a school for the hearing that would provide him with sign language interpreters not really knowing how to sign himself until attending Gallaudet, a University for the deaf/hard of hearing. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in computer science, which he became highly interested in early on in his life due to the majority of television programming lacking closed captioning. Dr. Braun earned his Ph.D. in cell biology and molecular genetics from the University of Maryland and then moved on to a traineeship in cancer pharmacology at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. During his traineeship, he studied signal transduction pathways, which are crucial in cancer and pain research. Dr. Braun was also put in charge of Gallaudet’s first biological research laboratory, the Molecular Genetics Laboratory. As a mentor for graduate students, he enjoys providing young scientists with the opportunity to work in a rich environment that welcomes and promotes the normalization of deafness through rich social interactions with other deaf postdocs and faculty. Ultimately, Dr. Braun wishes to end the misconception that deaf people are less educable.
