(1). MAKE A DECISION: How do you think Kristine and her family should proceed?
Kristine and Carson should be allowed to make their own decisions about having biological children just as any other couple would; they are both doing well developmentally and have supportive families.
While Kristine and Carson are doing well and have supportive families, they should be strongly discouraged from having children due to their disabilities and the risks that their biological children would also have disabilities.
While Kristine and Carson are currently doing well and have plenty of support, having a child would be too challenging, even if that child were perfectly healthy. It may be best to consider surgical sterilization.
Sometimes difficult decisions have to be made; although Kristine wants her own, it is probably best for her never to have any. Her parents should discuss sterilization with her so that conception will never be a concern.
(2). Think about the factors that influenced your decision regarding Kristine’s situation. Why did you choose the option that you did? Include these aspects of Kristine’s profile in your response:
The genetic and chromosomal risks to a child that Kristine and Carson might conceive
The availability of formal (e.g., the Consortium for Community Living) and informal (family and friends) support for Kristine and Carson, both now and as parents, should they have children
The ethical issues posed by this case and your positions on these issues
