Data in Everyday Life
As you have learned, you generate data as you go through your everyday life: clicking on internet sites, driving, and grocery shopping, all collect data that is being analyzed in order to understand human behavior and create algorithms. This assignment will concentrate on how this passive data collection works and some of the ethical considerations that impact it.
For this assignment you will write a 300 -500 word expository essay to address the following:
Define and discuss passive data collection
Identify three sources of passive data collection in your everyday life.
Research how these datasets are used. How is the data collected? Who has access to it? What is it used for? Is it stripped of identifying information before it is shared?
What kinds of questions can be answered by that data? What kinds of questions cannot be answered? If you could opt out of the data collection would you and why?
Identify ethical issues – is there consent for these data collection sources? How is the consent obtained? What other ethical issues can you think of when you reflect on the data that we collect on people every day?
Analyze the Data. How do you visualize this data being collected and used in the future?
