or a critical essay that has been published within a volume/book of critical essays on the play selectd.
You may NOT use a review of the play. In short, your source must be a PUBLISHED piece of literary criticism. You must be particularly careful if you try to use something that you find online; you must make certain that it is actually published, peer-reviewed literary criticism. To ensure that you are using a scholarly article, you may wish to search for your article through one of the databases on the St. John’s University library web page. Please choose your scholarly article at least two weeks before the paper’s
due date. If you are not certain if your chosen article is a scholarly article, please don’t hesitate to ask me to review your article in advance of your paper’s submission, but don’t ask the night before
The paper is due.
For this assignment, write a 5 to 6 page, double-spaced, word-processed paper in which you do the
following:
1. Summarize accurately the scholarly argument advanced by the author of your article/essay.
2. Comment critically on the argument advanced by the author of the article/essay based upon
your own critical reading of the play.
You must write at least two pages on each part of the paper: (1) the summary of the scholarly
argument and (2) your critical commentary on the argument advanced.
Your paper is to be focused. Each paper requires knowledge and understanding of the article/essay chosen, effective critical commentary, and demonstrated knowledge of the play. You may,
of course, agree or disagree, in whole or in part, with the scholar/critic who wrote the article/essay, but you must be able to explain why by utilizing and referring to the play. Your analysis MUST be supported by documented quotes from both your scholarly article and play.
