1.
Develop a thesis
statement that addresses these two considerations:
1.
What distinguishes
academic writing from other types of writing (e.g., workplace, social
networking, etc.), and
2.
What distinguishes
the literature review from other genres of academic writing in terms of its
conventions, purpose, reasoning, and style.
2.
Develop an essay,
3-4 double spaced pages in length, that considers the following question sets
(note that you can use your discussion assignment as a starting point for
completing this assignment):
1.
Reasoning
§ What is the central line of reasoning
of the literature review you have selected?
§ What distinguishes this line of
reasoning from other types of writing you have experience with (e.g. research
papers, workplace writing, etc.)?
§ How would you evaluate the quality of
this literature review’s line of reasoning in relation to other reviews we
have read as a class? Is its central claim supported by clear,
well-evidenced reasons, or are there shortcomings?
2.
Genre Competency
§ How would you describe the form and
structure of the literature review?
§ At the broadest level, what
are the review’s key components, and what purposes do these
components serve?
§ At a more narrow level, how
are paragraphs structured, and how does this structure realize the goals
of the literature review?
§ How would you evaluate this literature
review in terms the way in which it does or does not realize the typical
conventions of the genre?
3.
Reader Engagement
§ What aspects of the text demonstrate
that the writer has (or has not) written the review with the reader’s
expectations and values in mind?
§ How would you evaluate the review’s
engagement of the reader in comparison with other reviews we have read as a
class?
4.
Style
§ In general, how would you describe the
voice and tone of the literature review?
§ In particular, how would you
describe any of the following aspects of the review’s syntax and
mechanics: first person language, sentence length, diction, and passive
voice?
