Personal narrative essay

Rhetorical Situation: As you write the narrative, you will also want to think about the essay’s purpose, audience, stance, exigence:
▪ Purpose: Why do you want to share this story with others? What do you hope other people will understand by reading your story?
▪ Audience: Who do you imagine reading your story—people with a similar experience? Educators? Peers? Do you think others will understand your perspective? How much background information will you need to supply?
▪ Stance: What is your attitude towards the topic? Do you want to express this openly and directly to your audience? Also consider tone. How do you want your readers to “see” you. Do you want to be critical? Humorous? Sincere? Self-effacing?
▪ Exigence: “So what?” Why is your story important? Is it related to an urgent need or
demand in school, culture, society, etc.? Why should your audience care about it?
