Task: Use one of the themes below to write a comparison and contrast essay. You will be comparing and/or contrasting events and effects from David M. Oshinsky’s Polio to a modern occurrence. Why is it important to read about the particular theme you will discuss? What will the reader learn or change their mind about? The answer to these questions should be a part of your thesis.

“Power of the Purse” – explore philanthropy, it’s motivations and results.
“Scientific (mis)Direction” – explore the results of scientific inquiry when one imposes self-limitations or one has limitations placed upon themselves.
“Illusion verses Reality” – explore this concept, looking at motivations and results.
“Innovation” – explore the mechanisms that enable or inhibit new ways of thinking or performing tasks; include effects if there are any

Due to the many ways that this essay could be developed and organized, these instructions are purposely vague. Students should use their interests to guild them in researching modern topics and expect to use critical thinking to explore how their modern occurrence relates to Oshinsky’s text and the theme they chose. We will be brainstorming topics throughout the next month and a half.

Minimum of 900-words with an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion
Minimum of 3 Sources: Oshinsky’s text and of 2 other sources (CSUS database source, .gov or .edu)
