Introduction (300 words): 8%
Tell your reader about their(three popular music styles from three different regions) origin, socio-historical context, and why you chose those particular songs.
Middle Section (3 paragraphs): 10%
Pick three themes from the weekly lectures and discuss how each of them relates to each of your chosen songs. 150-200 words for each paragraph.
Themes that can choose from are:
1. Strategic hybridism:
definition:” .. Japanese culture engages in “strategic hybridism” with the belief that the foreign can be integrated without contaminating the Japanese core. It hybridizes cultural texts by adapting
them for global consumption but with the belief that the texts’ Japanese essence is unchanged (Iwabuchi, 2004). Thus, Japan engages with the West in its local space, produces hybrid representations that are an articulation between cultures that is thought to retain a distinctive Japanese essence, and distributes that hybridized text globally back to the West for those in the West to engage in hybridity with an already hybrid text” (Oh 2017, p. 373) )
hybirdity: “one of the achievements of poststructuralist theory has been to liberate the subject from notions of fixity and purity of origin. In the process, hybridity as a loaded discourse of dangerous racial contaminations has been transformed into one of cultural creativity: ‘insults’ have been turned into ‘strengths’” (Werbner and Pnina 2015, p. 21).
2. Racial appropriation
definition: “Racial appropriation, often discussed in the context of cultural appropriation, involves members of a dominant culture adopting cultural elements from a culture that has been historically marginalized or oppressed, without permission, acknowledgment, or respect for their original meaning or significance”
3. Hybridization:
definition: “…the history of all cultures is the history of cultural borrowing…Culture is never just a matter of ownership, of borrowing and lending with absolute debtors and creditors, but rather of appropriations, common experiences and interdependencies of all kinds among different cultures” (Said 1993 p. 217)
4. Racial identities
