Scholarly Position Paper—Environmental Health (due 10/15/2023)

The Code of Ethics for Nurses (American Nurses Association, 2015) Principle 9.4 calls nurses to “advocate for policies, programs, and practices within the healthcare environment that maintain, sustain, and repair the natural world” (p. 37). During a recent testimony for the Minnesota Climate Caucus, it was reported that nurses are ethically bound to recognize that “Social justice extends beyond human health and well-being to the health and well-being of the natural world” (p.37). Further, The Executive Summary of the 2019 Lancet Countdown report warns: The life of every child born today will be profoundly affected by climate change, with populations around the world increasingly facing extremes of weather, food and water insecurity, changing patterns of infectious disease, and a less certain future. Without accelerated intervention, this new era will come to define the health of people at every stage of their lives. Review lectures, read Stanhope Chapters 8 and 16, and review the following resources:

Like a debate, a position paper presents one side of an arguable opinion about a topic or issue. The goal of a position paper is to convince the audience that your opinion is valid and defensible. Ideas that you are considering need to be carefully examined in choosing a topic, developing your argument, and organizing your paper. Select a topic related to how the environment affects the health of a population. Review and present the relevant literature. Your job is to take one side of the argument and persuade your audience that you have well-founded knowledge of the topic being presented. It is important to support your argument with evidence to ensure the validity of your claims, as well as to refute the counterclaims to show that you are well informed about both sides. Be certain to consider all sides and present the issue clearly.

I wanted to provide you with some guidance and additional resources to assist you with completing your Scholarly Position Paper.

The Scholarly Position is worth 35% of your course grade and has seven required components. You can find the guidance for the paper in the Final Paper section/Discussion Forum and the course syllabus.

Briefly, here’s a general guide to the required elements and what should be covered in each element.

Introduction to the topic
State the topic of concern (i.e. air pollution); a brief reason why it is a problem; implications for public/population/community health; any policy issues
Summary of the relevant literature
This is important; the literature supports the seriousness of the topic; and provides evidence of the problem, impact, etc. Sources should be from peer-reviewed literature; try to limit website sources
Development and presentation of the argument
This is your position. For example, if my topic was contaminated water in Flint, Michigan; I might take the position that the Federal Government needs to provide more funds, oversight, etc. to remedy the situation.
Refutation of counterclaims
Explain briefly, those who have a different perspective/opinion/position about the subject. In the example above, perhaps there are factions of the government that claim that the work is done and there is no need for additional intervention. After you provide two counterclaims, describe why you feel differently. In the case above, “new cases of lead poisoning are emerging since the end of the funding”, etc.
Nursing role in the promotion of the health of the affected population
Self-explanatory; Is it participating in screening? Education? Attending community meetings? Are there any nursing-related organizations that support your actions and/or this issue?
Summary of issue’s relevance to nursing and health
Why as a community of nursing/profession is the issue important? Think of our class, why are environmental issues important to nursing as a profession?
Writing style, use of APA 7th edition
Self-explanatory

Additional Considerations:

The paper must be presented in APA format. That means that there should be a cover page, page numbers, references, and citations. Use the Final Paper template/outline noted above.
Sources should not be older than five (5) years except in the case of seminal work. Review the list of peer-reviewed sources found in your syllabus. These are peer-reviewed, reliable resources.
The paper should be between 4 and 6 pages, excluding the references and cover page. Please keep this in mind when preparing your work.
The paper MUST be submitted through SafeAssign.
Resources:

I learned that there are a few great writing/APA-style resources available to WPU students. Please utilize these resources for this assignment and your remaining coursework and future classes.

Feedback-

Topic presentation for approval:
Topic: Pesticide Exposure and Poisoning.

-The nature of the environmental concern and the population affected.
How pesticides affect children’s health.
-Why this environmental concern is good or bad for society, a population or community?
Children are being exposed to pesticides residues on food, water and even inhalation causing short term and long term effect on their health.
-How this environmental concern impacts the role of the nurse or nursing practice?
This affects the nurses role and practice due to the incidence of chronic diseases, cancer and other issues such as neurological and behavioral development. Impacted children may need extra services and/or care provided by nurses.

References:
Nice start, are there limited sources in the US? I noted a number of foreign sources (be mindful they may have other or different regulations) and .edu sites, that are not considered credible. The Columbia U. site, for instance, is consumer information.

Argument and counterclaim-
Great job capturing the essence of those who would question your claim.

Nursing Role & Relevance of topic to nursing-
Nice job seeing the nurse as an advocate, an environmental guardian, and others! Be sure to develop some of your suggestions, citing as needed. One area that you mentioned, advocacy and lobbying, as well as others, offer a great opportunity to briefly expand on this to expand your knowledge, and is recommended. Another thought is you might also identify some connection to stakeholders as you research the nurses role and relevance to nursing. Hope this is helpful.
