1. Technology has become both a means to engage in crimes and also a target for these crimes in numerous ways. Through the rise of CMCs (computer-mediated communication), it has opened doors for offenders to be able to communicate more efficiently and allow hackers to connect through forums. It also allowed for a means of connection for subculture groups that hold similar ideas which in turn allows for them to carry out criminal activities potentially. An example of this in action, as found in our textbook “Cybercrime and Ditigital Forensics” it mentions that the exchange of prostitution interest is difficult to conduct in real life so it may be done through online chat rooms/forums. Additionally, this allows offenders to hide physical descriptors or their identity entirely. Another example mentioned is how drug rings use it to connect with those wishing to buy. The use of technology has also become a target for crime though with the issue of cybercrime, cyberterror, and cyber deviance. This involves hacking and misusing technology in order to gain personal information such as passwords and account information on people. This then leads to how theft, stalking, trespassing, and other criminal acts happen online.
2. I feel as though there is quite a bit of overlap in real-world crimes and cybercrime because there are
many types of crimes being carried out through both and technology has allowed real-world crimes to be carried out more efficiently. The example of drug rings using online forums to carry out purchases of illegal substances, as mentioned in the text, has allowed for these rings to connect with an even larger audience of consumers. Also, through dealing online it is harder to get caught because identities and other evidence can be hidden. The same applies to other crimes such as theft and stalking: with technology, someone can go under the radar of carrying these crimes out because of the absence of evidence. I feel that there are many factors to take into consideration when discussing whether real-world and cybercrime should be treated equally under the justice system though. They should be treated similarly but not always the same based on factors such as the severity of harm the criminal act did, and the motivations/intent of the activity. It is also important to look at what laws are in place regarding cybercrime.
