Write atleast an 1,000-word essay that compares and contrasts the use of the rhetorical appeals
(logos, pathos, and ethos) from the essays
“An Essay on the Principle of Population (Links to an external site.)” (393-400) by Thomas Malthus AND “The Case for Birth Control (Links to an external site.)” (409-415) by Margaret Sanger
the back-and-forth method, you organize your compare/contrast not by the essays
themselves but by the appeals. As you discuss each appeal, you’ll go “back and forth”
between the two essays. Let’s say you’re comparing the rhetorical strategies of Thomas
Malthus and Margaret Sanger. You might begin the body section of your paper with an
analysis of how each writer makes use of pathos. You’ll begin by discussing Malthus’s use of
pathos and then you’ll bring in Sanger’s use of pathos.
As you’re discussing Sanger, you
might make some references back to Malthus to possibly argue why pathos features more
heavily in her essay or how her heavier use of pathos affects readers. You could imagine one
long paragraph that compares/contrasts their use of pathos, or you might consider a
paragraph on Malthus’ use of pathos and then a paragraph on Sanger’s use of pathos that
makes comparisons back to the Malthus paragraph on pathos. You’ll them move to the next
section, possibly a compare/contrast of their use of logos…and so on.
